Glucola Drink for Gestational Diabetes Know The Alternatives & Tips
Why Is Gestational Diabetes Tested in Pregnancy?
Gestational diabetes (GD) is a temporary condition in which blood sugar levels become elevated during pregnancy. Although it often resolves after birth, GD can impact both mother and baby if left unmanaged. Some of the risks include a higher likelihood of a large baby, preterm birth, an increased risk of cesarean delivery and a risk of the mother of developing type 2 diabetes later in life.
To screen for gestational diabetes, healthcare providers usually recommend a glucose tolerance test between 24 and 28 weeks of pregnancy. The typical test requires drinking a sweet, concentrated beverage known as glucola, which contains a high dose of glucose. One hour after drinking it, blood is drawn to measure the body’s ability to process the sugar. If the blood sugar is elevated, further testing is conducted.
The Dreaded Glucola Drink
Many women feel uneasy about the glucola drink for a few reasons. First, it’s extremely sugary and more concentrated than most sweets you’d consume in one sitting and it can lead to nausea or dizziness. The drink’s artificial ingredients and dye can also be a point of discomfort for women who are otherwise focused on eating a clean during pregnancy.
But thankfully, there are alternatives!
The Fresh Test is a natural glucose solution made from non-GMO, dye-free ingredients. It’s just as effective in measuring blood glucose levels but without the additives and artificial ingredients. Some providers allow other natural alternatives, such as consuming a specific amount of fruit juice or a natural food-based glucose source. For women interested in avoiding the standard glucola, it’s worth having a discussion with your provider about options that align with your comfort level and health needs.
Managing Gestational Diabetes with Diet and Exercise
If you do test positive for GD, it's okay! It can often be managed with lifestyle changes. A balanced diet rich in complex carbohydrates, lean proteins, and healthy fats, alongside regular, moderate exercise, can make a huge difference in managing blood sugar levels.
Partnering with a dietitian or nutritionist knowledgeable about gestational diabetes can help develop a personalized plan that works for your body and lifestyle. Regular movement, like walking or prenatal yoga, can also help in regulating blood glucose by improving the body’s response to insulin.
Your Choice
Remember, as with any prenatal test, you have the right to explore options and make the choices that align best with your comfort and health goals. Many women feel that discussing concerns or alternatives with their provider helps them feel more involved in the process and makes the experience far less daunting. The glucola test may be the norm, but alternatives are growing as more women ask questions and seek options that fit their lifestyle and beliefs. Whether you choose the standard test, an alternative like The Fresh Test, or manage GD through diet and exercise, remember that you’re not alone!
