Why I’m Thankful to Be a Birth Doula in Philadelphia This Thanksgiving
As Thanksgiving approaches, I’ve been reflecting on what I’m most grateful for this year. Being a doula is such a big part of my life and honestly, it’s one of the greatest blessings. Getting to support women through pregnancy, labor, and birth and share those intimate moments is a gift that never loses its spark.
So, I wanted to take a moment to share my gratitude with you and reflect on everything this work has brought into my life.
I’m Thankful for Women’s Strength
Every time I attend a birth, I’m reminded of just how strong and capable women are. Seeing a mom dig deep and find her inner power is inspiring. Labor isn’t easy (understatement of the year!), but watching someone push through it and realize just how strong they are is something I’ll never get tired of.
I’m Thankful for Being Trusted
The fact that families welcome me into such an intimate, vulnerable time in their lives is not lost on me. It’s a huge honor and it’s what drives me to show up with my whole heart. Whether I’m squeezing a hand, helping with breathing or just being there to listen, I’m so thankful I get to be part of something so sacred.
I’m Thankful for This Community
I’m also so grateful for the amazing people I get to work alongside other doulas, midwives, nurses, doctors and for all the families who have trusted me to be part of their journey. Being surrounded by people who believe in empowering women and supporting birth is a pretty great feeling.
I’m Thankful for My Health
As a doula, being able to physically and emotionally show up for the families I support is so important and I’m incredibly thankful for my health. Whether it’s being able to wake up at 3:00 am to support a client or just being fully present, I know I couldn’t do this work without taking care of myself too. Good health is a gift and I’m grateful every day that I’m able to do what I love.
My Heart Is Full
This Thanksgiving, I’m taking a moment to soak it all in the strength of the moms I’ve supported, the joy of new life, and the love I’ve witnessed in so many families. I feel so lucky to do what I do. To all the families who’ve let me be part of their stories, thank you! Thank you for trusting me, for letting me witness your courage and for sharing some of the most special moments of your lives with me.
Wishing you and your loved ones a Thanksgiving full of joy, connection, and maybe an extra slice of pie.
