Top 10 Questions to Ask a Birth Doula in the Interview Process

Are you on the lookout for someone to guide you through one of the most incredible journeys of your life? A birth doula can offer invaluable support during pregnancy, labor, and postpartum. But how do you choose the right one for you? We've got you covered! Here are the top 10 questions to ask a birth doula in the interview process to see if they are the right fit:

1. What Inspired You to Become a Birth Doula?

  • Understanding their motivation can give you insight into their passion for supporting families during birth.

2. What Services Do You Offer?

  • From prenatal visits to postpartum support, make sure their services align with your needs and expectations. Ask about additional offerings like HypnoBirthing classes, placenta encapsulation and birth photography.

3. Can You Describe Your Doula Philosophy?

  • Every doula has a unique approach. Make sure their philosophy resonates with your own beliefs and wishes for your birth experience.

4. How Do You Support Clients During Labor?

  • Whether it's providing massage, suggesting position changes, or offering emotional reassurance.

5. What is Your Availability Around My Due Date?

  • Ensure your doula will be available when you need them most, both leading up to and during your labor.

6. What is Your Experience (Home Birth, VBAC, etc.)?

  • If you have specific preferences or circumstances, inquire about their experience in supporting similar scenarios.

7. What point do you join for in-person labor support and how long do you stay?

  • Discussing the timing of when a doula joins can be beneficial in order to explore the comfort measures that you can familiarize yourself with before their arrival.

8. How Do You Handle Unforeseen Changes or Complications During Birth?

  • Understanding how they adapt to unexpected situations can give you confidence in their ability to support you through any scenario.

9. What is Your Fee and What Does It Include?

  • Clarify all financial aspects upfront to avoid any surprises and ensure that the services provided fit within your budget.

10. How Do You Support Families During the Postpartum Period?

  • Postpartum support is just as important as prenatal and labor support. Inquire about the doula's role in the days and weeks following the birth.

BONUS QUESTIONS. What Certifications Do You Have?

  • While certification isn't everything, knowing your doula has undergone formal training can provide peace of mind. Look for certifications from recognized organizations like DONA International, CAPPA, or ICEA.
